Girl, Don't Do It

And by "it" I mean see "Changeling"-- it was so bad, you guys. Emily and I were truly shocked and devastated by its awfulness. There were many things wrong with this movie, but I think the single thing that bothered us the most was a long, gratuitous death scene. It verged on emotional pornography. It didn't do anything for the movie, and it was really upsetting. Ugh. So this made me think-- what movies have I seen that depict death (as in, an actual scene of someone/something dying) in a thoughtful, compelling way? What movies make watching the death feel necessary, if not completely pleasant?

Laugh if you will, but I think my #1 favorite death scene of all time is in "Terms of Endearment". I cry my life away every single time I watch it, but it isn't sappy or pat. It's abrupt and pedestrian, just like most people's deaths, and I love it. I'm sorry if I just ruined that movie for anyone. This post could lead to a lot of movie ruining.

That is sad news! I was looking forward to seeing this movie, actually, it looked good. In true "this reminds me of that" form, I have a couple of comments on this.

First- I was reading an article in a free daily newspaper in Los Angeles about anticipated movies of the Fall/Winter 2008 season, some noted as "Oscar buzzworthy" and others noted as "Big screen blockbusters," and while I cannot find this article, I can report I am quite excited about several of the movies that were listed, included:

1. MILK (When I was in San Fran, we saw Sean Penn at the WORLD premiere at the Castro Theater! I can't wait for this movie - the trailer makes it look amazing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW0lQrWn5VI

2. Revolutionary Road (I can't resist a Kate Winslet movie).

3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt aging backwards)

There's also DOUBT w/Meryl Streep that looks good, as well as Madagascar 2 (yes, I want to see this), Twilight (vampire love!), Slumdog Millionaire, Defiance, Frost/Nixon.

Movies I do NOT want to see include Marley and Me, the new Clint Eastwood movie (he plays a racist car mechanic I think?) and Yes Man.

Your thoughts?

Also, many of you know this, but last year, I went and saw all 5 of the best picture nominees in a one-day cinematic event from 11am-11pm on a Saturday one of the weekends before the awards in February. I didn't go necessarily b/c I love the award show, but more b/c it's ridiculous to go see 5 movies in one day, and b/c it was only $30 w/unlimited popcorn and soda. Plus I got a "There will be blood" pewter mug.

I'm going again this year and we're trying to get a lot of folks to come! Not 'til Feb., and I'll send an email then, but think about it :)

OMG that sounds so fun!

We saw a preview for the new Clint Eastwood movie. It looked... weird? OK? Problematic? Hard to say. His character is kind of racist, but he gets involved in helping his neighbors, who are Asian, when a gang wants to kill one of the teenagers. Then the gang comes after him, and some shitstorm occurs. I'll probably be skipping that one. I want to try and read Revolutionary Road first, because it is supposed ot be great. We'll see if that happens. we also saw a preview for Frost/Nixon, which looks awesome, and I bet will get nominated. If Angie gets nominated for Changeling, I'll eat my fucking hat.
